How to lead and succeed when it matters most: Deploying America's veterans in response to natural disasters and global crises

At some point, most of us will be confronted with a situation where the stakes are high, the risks considerable and the options less than ideal. Drawing from his experience in the military, as a CEO, and his debut book, Take Command, Jake Wood provides the framework to thrive in high-stakes situations—key business decisions, a mistake we made in the past or an upset customer wanting quick answers to tough questions. He outlines the how, when and why of resolute, lead-from-the-front leadership, offering a set of principles one can draw upon in any situation.

When:   Tues. Nov. 3, 2015; 7:30 p.m.

Where:   Kane Hall, Room 120
4069 Spokane Lane
Seattle, WA 98105

Cost:   Free, but advance registration is required.

Jake Wood is the co-founder and CEO of Team Rubicon, a nationwide nonprofit organization that provides military veterans with the opportunity to continue their service by responding to natural disasters and global crises. Team Rubicon’s primary mission is bridging the disaster relief gap between the moment a disaster happens and the point at which conventional aid organizations respond. A leading veteran advocate, Wood speaks around the country on issues facing returning veterans and is a member of numerous national committees on the topic.

Natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides and hurricanes threaten lives and livelihoods across the globe. Presented by the UW Graduate School, UW Alumni Association and the UW College of the Environment, Surviving Disaster: Natural Hazards and Resilient Communities explores the latest developments in social and natural science helping us prepare for, respond to and survive environmental disasters, wherever they strike.
