A Celebration of Life: Dr. Sarah Reichard (1957-2016)
Washington Park Arboretum and Don James Center at Husky Stadium

Sarah ReichardOn Thursday, October 13, the UW School of Environmental and Forest Sciences will be hosting a celebration of life in honor of Professor Sarah Hayden Reichard, who passed away on August 29. The celebration will be a two-part event, and guests are invited to attend either or both parts.

The first part of the celebration will be at the Washington Park Arboretum from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Guests are asked to meet in Wisteria Hall at the Graham Visitor’s Center at 2 p.m. From there they will be given a map indicating three separate areas around the park where guest speakers will be sharing stories of Sarah. The speakers will remain at the areas and will be giving informal chats. Each talk will last approximately 15 minutes.

UPDATE (10/12): The weather forecast for Thursday afternoon includes potential heavy rain and high winds. For the event in the Arboretum, the walks will be take place in rain, but will be cancelled if the wind exceeds 15 mph. In either case, Wisteria Hall in the Graham Visitors Center will be open for those who wish to congregate and share stories about Sarah. You are welcome to join us at the Arboretum regardless of weather, and also are welcome to come to the event at the Don James Center even if you haven’t RSVP’d for that event.

Later that afternoon, we will host a more formal celebration at the Don James Center in Husky Stadium. This program will begin with a reception from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by a formal presentation featuring several speakers from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

If you are attending the celebration at the Arboretum, we encourage you to carpool or use public transportation. There is limited parking at the Graham Visitors Center, nearby gravel lots, and a lot by the Wilcox Bridge.

Parking information for the evening celebration at the Don James Center in Husky Stadium:

  • E-18 is our designated lot for the event. The charge for parking will be $10 cash for anyone attending.
  • For handicapped parking, you must have a sticker and the charge will also be $10 cash.  A designated parker from the university will be in E-9 and will be anticipating handicapped parking needs. They will have attendants in place beginning at 5pm.

The stadium is also accessible by Link light rail and Metro bus.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Dean Lisa Graumlich of the College of the Environment shared a wonderful tribute to Sarah on Friday, September 16, and we encourage you to read many other beautiful reflections in the blog comments on Offshoots, the UW Botanic Gardens and the American Public Gardens Association.
