Justice Sonia Sotomayor visits UW
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor asks herself two questions when she goes to bed at night: What have I done that’s something nice for someone else today? And, what did I learn new today? “It doesn’t have to be big momentous things, but they’re building blocks to growing,” Sotomayor told an audience at the University of Washington.

Deep Dive Highlight
School of Music
The School of Music Deep Dive provided a number of insights into the technical, musical and instructional aspects of the UW Symphony performances. Although I’ve been backstage at Meany on a number of occasions, this was the first time that I’d seen the mechanics used to customize the stage to different types of performances. The demonstration made it clear how tailoring the space maximizes the effectiveness of various types of music.
The rehearsal itself was wonderful. Not only did we have the pleasure of observing the development of a performance, but the ease with which the orchestra incorporated Maestro Morlot’s suggestions into their playing spoke volumes about their talent, and the musical maturity and subtleties of which they’re capable.
I was very interested in Maestro Morlot’s remarks during the reception about learning more from the student orchestra than from the well-established ones with which he works. It’s particularly intriguing that it’s the students who question him, rather than the professional musicians, which reflects not only their eagerness to learn, but his approachability and eagerness to teach. And, as always, it’s a joy to hear students speak about their music.
Many thanks to Richard Karpen and his staff, as well as to the students and M. Morlot for inviting us to share in the fun!
