Welcome to a new academic year at the University of Washington! Whether you are a new student or a returning student, I hope that you had a great summer and that you are arriving on campus healthy and ready to take advantage of some of the amazing opportunities our UW community has to offer.

You can expect a great deal to happen in the coming year -- classes, lectures, athletic events, concerts, opportunities for study abroad and public service, and lots of learning both in and out of the classroom. No matter which activities and opportunities you choose to pursue, our entire community is committed to working together to give you the best possible educational experience.

A wide variety of people and resources are here to support you. You can read about some of the services in place on the Seattle campus on the web site for the Office of the Vice President and Vice Provost for Student Life. UW Bothell also has a web site where you can read about available student services, as does UW Tacoma.

This fall is already off to an exciting start with a wonderful Freshman Convocation and the news that Professor Heather McHugh from English has been named a 2009 MacArthur Fellow. Now it’s your turn to be a part of what comes next. Have a great year!

Sincerely,
