2009 UW Minority Business of the Year award recipients announced
The 2009 Minority Business of the Year award recipients are: William D. Bradford Minority Business of the Year Award SE Washington Minority Business of the Year NE Washington Minority Business of the Year King County Minority Business of the Year NW Washington Minority Business of the Year Pierce County Minority Business of the Year The awards will be presented in partnership with the Puget Sound Business Journal. We are also honored to have Bank of America and Chase as this year's gold sponsors and American Family Insurance as our bronze sponsor. 2009 Minority CEO SummitThis year’s Minority CEO Summit on December 10 from 3:00 to 5:00 will focus on The New Normal: Life After the Financial Crisis. We have an incredible panel of speakers to address the new environment for small businesses in accessing bank financing, the impact of changes in consumer behavior on small businesses, and the opportunities and challenges arising from the growing green economy. WHO SHOULD ATTEND Each annual summit combines a unique educational experience with discussions that lead to the development of strategies to accelerate the growth of minority-owned businesses throughout Washington. Typically 40-50 CEOs, Presidents, and Chairpersons of the state’s largest and fast growing $1 million+ minority-owned businesses attend the summit each year. Bank of America has been sponsoring this seminar for the last four years for 10 business owners from the Spokane region. Through the generous support of the Foster School’s Executive Programs Office the BEDC is able to open this year’s seminar to any business interested in attending. Under the leadership of William Bradford, the Endowed Professor of Business and Economic Development, the MBEP has helped 50 CEOs from 10 states grow their profits. Each participant has led a company with revenues of at least $300,000 and the median-revenue size for MBEP firms has been $2 million. To learn more about how the MBEP can help your company grow, please contact Jennifer Lang, Director, Executive Education, at (206) 616-6426. 2010 BEDC Board Fellows ProgramThe BEDC’s Board Fellows Program is entering its 10th year of placing MBA students on boards of directors for some of the Seattle area’s leading nonprofit organizations. In its first year, there were four MBAs who served on nonprofit boards. Thanks to six years of steady support from Wells Fargo Bank this program has expanded to 37 graduate students serving on 23 nonprofit boards. UPS added funding to this program in 2009 which is allowing us to involve students from the Evans School of Public Affairs for the first time. BEDC Student Leadership Summit for underrepresented students of color at the UW Foster School of BusinessThrough the generous support of Boeing, the BEDC is proud to host the inaugural Student Leadership Summit for underrepresented students of color at the UW Foster School of Business. Students of color from the Foster School of Business' undergraduate and graduate programs will participate in an interactive workshop led by Morela Hernandez, Assistant Professor of Management at the UW Foster School of Business followed by an informative and intimate conversation with William Ayer, CEO and Chairman of Alaska Airlines. Students who attend the Student Leadership Summit will also attend the Minority Business of the Year Awards banquet as guests of the BEDC immediately following the summit.
