Time Change

inline image Now that we all set our clocks back an hour this past weekend (you did, right?) maybe we can start getting some more sun. I don't know about you, but it started to seem like the sun wasn't coming out until noon only to then set around 3. Argh!

However, just because we "fell back" doesn't mean we should keep from "springing forward" - in fact, now is a great time to give some thought to your future and, in this edition of the newsletter, we give you some ideas and things to ponder.

Take a look at some of the great Career Center offerings this month: Grad & Professional School Fair, Law School Fair, Employer Conversations about interviewing successfully, internships and much more.

What YOU Should Be Doing in November

Pay Attention

Inline ImageI know, it's November — mid-terms are over and the holidays are almost here. But, that's no reason to ignore the little things, like finding an internship, a holiday job or beginning the path to a meaninful career. In fact, this is the perfect time to start.

If you're a Freshman, November is the perfect time to start thinking about your major - finding what interests you and how it may work into your desired career track. You can find a ton of information at the Gateway Center and on our site here.

If you're a Sophomore, this month should be all about finding out what you can do with your major, if you've declared it, and starting to look for internships. Did you know that having an internship during your time at the UW increases your employability exponentially?

If you're a Junior, you should definitely be finding an internship. Haven't started looking? Well then you should login to HuskyJobs and start applying, contact your department and check ou tthe Carlson Leadership and Public Service Center! Of course, you'll want a resume and cover letter first, so be sure to stop by our Resume and Cover Letters workshop to learn more. Now is also the time to start thinking about Grad School and/or Law School - so make sure to stop by the Grad Fair on 11/3 or the Law Fair on 11/16.

Finally, if you're a Senior, November is the month you should be looking for potential job prospects and beginning your On-Campus Interviews. If you haven't had an internship already, jump to it and get on HuskyJobs. If you've already gone through an internship, start looking at the jobs in HuskyJobs that mention they start after your graduation. If you don't have a cover letter or resume yet, make sure to come to the Resume and Cover Letters workshop ASAP! You too should stop by the Grad and Law Fairs if you're thinking about continuing your education.

As you can see, there's something to do for everyone in November. Although we may all prefer to be thinking about the holidays, snow boarding on the pass or taking a trip to Hawai'i for the break, taking a little time to think about your future options now will greatly benefit you down the line.

Want Job Security?
Work on Your Education.

News of the Day

Job security has become a bit of a professional artifact. It existed at one time, and your parents or grandparents can attest to it. You probably didn't witness it firsthand, but the stories they tell are fascinating. If you showed up on time, worked hard and delivered results, you didn't worry about your job. And if you had a college education? Well, you could pretty much bronze your nameplate because you weren't going anywhere.

Then the world changed and workers realized they could be gone tomorrow. It sounds a bit like a disaster movie, but it's the truth. You might think your job's pretty safe, and chances are your hunch is right, but you probably wouldn't bet your life savings on it.

No one can guarantee you a surefire way to keep your job forever. What I can tell you is that a proven asset for professionals is education. Not just a degree in business if you want to go into sales, or in accounting if you want to be a CPA. While both are good paths that work for many people, you should also consider other educational credentials that augment your experience. Read More »

Death by Breath

Quick Tip

[inline image]In the event of bad breath, oxygen masks will drop from the ceiling... if only. When your breath stinks, it’s hard to do business.

Remedy garlic breath or bad breath during a business meal by chewing on parsley, drinking lemonade or taking advantage of the restaurant's after dinner mints. Chewing on coffee beans is a quick fix, although this might be followed later by coffee breath. Chewing gum is unprofessional, unless you are a football coach.
