CBE 2030
In its response to current economic
trends, the University of Washington undertook a campus-wide evaluation of practices
and priorities called “2Y2D”—how our decisions and actions over the course of the
next two years define and shape UW over the course of the next two decades. As part of this initiative, the provost asked
each unit to evaluate its programs, prioritize its strengths, and develop an
“academic business plan” to project its mission moving forward. Read more...
In the Spotlight
Sutton Honored with AIA 2011 Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award In December, the American
Institute of Architects Board of Directors bestowed the 2011 Whitney M. Young,
Jr. Award on Professor Sharon
Egretta Sutton FAIA. In their
announcement of the award, the AIA Board praised Sutton “for her efforts to
increase minority participation in the design professions and her advocacy on
behalf of environmental and social justice.”
The AIA conferred the Whitney M. Young, Jr. medal on Sutton at its

Truong Featured in Seattle
100: Portrait of a City Book and IE Article
Nhon (Nin) Truong (BLA ‘99) is an artist, entrepreneur, skateboard and
fashion designer, and lecturer in the Department of Landscape
Architecture. He’s also featured in
Chase Jarvis’ book, Seattle 100: Portrait of a
City,
as one of the people “defining and driving culture in
Seattle.” The book is the culmination
of a two-year project that provides an insightful ethnography of the people who
shape Seattle’s culture. Read more about

introduces Seattle-based architect George Suyama FAIA (BArch
’67) and his work, discussing relevant aspects of Suyama’s life, the influences
that have shaped his beliefs, and 20 of his built and unbuilt projects that

Team Orbital Sanders Wins People's Choice Award
With
30 yards of sand and a limit of 25 hours of labor, CBE alumni-heavy "Team
Orbital Sanders" created a work of art called "Missing Links" at
the World Championship of Sand
Sculpture
last September that claimed a People’s Choice award. Team Members Ed Mah
(BLA '76), Stan Allison, Jerry
Ernst (MUP '67),
Ken Large (BLA '77), Vern Cooley (BArch '70), and Jeff Benesi
(BFA '81) qualified for the World Championship with wins at local qualifying
events and a second-place finish at the Canadian Championships in Parksville,
Canada. The World Championship is the
largest gathering of sand sculptors in the world, and draws master competitors

UW 360 Turns Spotlight on CBE UW 360, a new UWTV program that “profiles the
fascinating people, programs and community connections that define the
University of Washington,” has produced three CBE-related segments since its

Runstad Center Team Wins NAIOP Competition
The University of Washington won first
place in the 2011 NAIOP (National Association of Industrial and Office
Properties) Real Estate Challenge on March 30.
Team members (from left) MSRE student Katlin Jackson, MSRE/MUP student
Katie Porter, MLA student Boting Zhang, and MSRE student Julia Levitt took home
the prestigious Bob Filley Cup as well as the People's Choice award. Read more...
CBE Students, Faculty, and Alumni Shine at Living City
Competition
A team of graduate architecture
students and a team of designers led by Assistant Professor Gundula Proksch
both won significant awards in the Living City Design Competition, while two other teams with CBE connections each
received the Living Building Commuity Choice Award. Held in Vancouver, BC in late April, the competition
called for teams worldwide “to create powerful visualizations of how existing
cities might be transformed to achieve and transcend the Living Building
Challenge 2.0, the built environment’s most rigorous performance standard.” Read more...
BLA Program Ranked Fourth in Nation DesignIntelligence’s Dean's Survey ranked the
University of Washington BLA program fourth
in the country in the
2011 edition of America's Best Architecture
and Design Schools. The UW program was cited for its urban
ecological focus, substantive community engagement, and Green Futures Lab.

Faculty News
Migliaccio Joins CM
Faculty
Giovanni C. Migliaccio joined the Department of Construction
Management faculty last August as an Assistant Professor. He previously held an assistant professor
position at the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque. Migliaccio holds an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Civil
Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, and a master-level degree
from Politecnico at Bari in Italy. Read

Corser Leads
Workshops at American University of Sharjah
In
mid-April, Assistant Professor Rob Corser was selected as one of six
international architects and educators invited to lecture and lead intensive
five-day workshops at the American University of Sharjah’s (United Arab
Emirates) annual Design Week. The American University of Sharjah, located
near Dubai, is the only NAAB-accredited architecture program outside of North

Hou Receives CELA
Award for Service Learning
Landscape Architecture Chair and Associate Professor Jeff Hou has
received the Award for
Excellence in Service-Learning Education from the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA). A member of the landscape architecture
department since 2001, Hou focuses on marginalized communities; his projects
have ranged from a children’s park in Seattle’s International District to the
rebuilding of an ethnic minority village in China following the 2008
earthquake.

Folke E. Nyberg
Architect,
author, civic activist, and CBE Professor Emeritus Folke E. Nyberg passed away
at his home August 15, 2010 after a two-year battle with cancer. Nyberg was a professor of architecture and urban
