Five Outstanding Researchers Will Join the Faculty this Fall
The Department is delighted to announce that five new faculty members have been hired and will join us this autumn. Yanqin Fan and Quan Wen of Vanderbilt University and Fabio Ghironi of Boston College will join the faculty as tenured full professors, while Xu Tan of Stanford University and Ji Hyung Lee of Yale University will join the faculty as tenure-track assistant professors.
Michelle Turnovsky Celebrated as One of Harvard Business School's Original Eight Female MBA Students
More than fifty years ago, in late1962, the faculty of Harvard Business School voted to allow women to apply for the full two years of the MBA program. By August 1963, eight women had been accepted and were preparing to begin their studies - among them, our own principal lecturer Michelle Turnovsky.
The eight women in the MBA Class of 1965 represented less than one percent of the entering class that year.
Assistant Professor Mu-Jeung Yang Delivers Annual Nobel Prize in Economics Lecture
Dr. Yang presented "From Inception to Implementation: Market Design from Labor Markets to Kidney Exchanges," discussing the work of 2012 Economics Nobel Laureates Al Roth and Lloyd Shapely.

Professor Suzanne Scotchmer, BA '70, Named 2013 Department of Economics Distinguished Alumna
Established in 1985, the
award is presented each June at the economics undergraduate graduation celebration, at which time the recipient delivers the commencement address.
Dr. Scotchmer is Professor of Economics, Law and Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. She is only the third woman to be honored with this award.
Noah Purcell, BA '02, Named Solicitor General for the Washington State Attorney General's Office
UW economics alumnus Noah Purcell took over as Washington State's Solicitor General in January. A Seattle native, Purcell went to Franklin High School. After graduating from UW with his economics degree, Purcell attended Harvard Law School, where he graduated magna cum laude and was editor of the Harvard Law Review.

2013-2014 Ensley Fellows Named
Graduate students David Kuenzel, Emre Aylar, Daniel Brent, and Yi-An Chen were awarded the prestigious Grover and Creta Ensley Fellowship for the 2013-2014 academic year. The fellowship was created in 1988 by alumnus Grover Ensley, who served as the first executive director of the joint economic committee of congress and as president of the national association of mutual savings banks.
